For those wanting to give CPLD a quick try there are actually a pic chip that has programmable logic gates, not near as many gates as a CPLD but the chips also has other features like a waveform generator and numerical controlled oscillator. Using higher microstep rates will decrease the chance of motor resonance affecting performance. Please note that 16 microstep mode requires a fast input step pulse rate to achieve high motor rpm speeds. It is only available for those who require it for a specific application. This is useful for larger machines that use dual lead screws per axis.
